Route 183 NJ Transit Bridge and Netcong Circle Replacement

Route 183 is a two-lane roadway and bridge that crosses NJ Transit’s railroad tracks. This bridge was substandard and in poor condition. Netcong Circle comprises the intersection of Routes 183 and 46, and it features another bridge that carries Route 46 westbound over Route 183 southbound. Based upon safety concerns, it was determined that both the circle and the Route 183 bridge over the railroad would need to be replaced.

Taylor Wiseman & Taylor was selected by NJDOT to design the replacement of the Route 183 bridge and Netcong Circle with an at-grade signalized intersection between Routes 183 and 46, including demolition of the Route 46 westbound bridge over Route 183 southbound. The project was designed to be pedestrian and bicycle compatible, and features several context-sensitive design solutions, including providing sidewalks along both Routes 46 and 183 and throughout the project limits that meet ADA requirements.

Extensive permits were also required, including a Flood Hazard Area Individual Permit and Freshwater Wetlands. As part of this process, extensive drainage investigations were performed, resulting in the design of two stormwater management basins and a water quality chamber. ROW acquisition, extensive utility relocations, complex staging and construction traffic control plans, signal design, roadway lighting, and driveway access design including cut-outs per the NJDOT Access Code, were also included.
