Taylor Wiseman & Taylor has completed several projects on the GSK research campus in Durham, North Carolina that involved SUE, survey, and/or site design services. One major project that included all three disciplines involved re-planning of the GSK Campus to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and consolidate parking to best support the campus.
The project began with a study of several different sites on the campus to determine the best locations for additional surface parking. TWT developed multiple conceptual sketches, rough grading and stormwater plans, preliminary cost estimates, and a list of potential concerns for each site under consideration. A presentation was then made to the GSK project team and recommendations were given based on GSK priorities and concerns. Three sites were chosen for full design.
As part of the design process TWT was responsible for locating and mapping all subsurface utilities in the project area, providing a detailed existing conditions survey, developing full construction drawings, and obtaining all permits necessary for construction. Maintaining pedestrian connectivity, protection of an existing pond, adherence to environmental regulations, and employee safety were major considerations in all design decisions. TWT also assisted with administering the bidding process to select a contractor and provided consultation during construction. TWT survey department provided construction staking services.
Other work that TWT completed at GSK includes the development of erosion control plans for a major soil remediation project, stockpile surveys with volume calculations, design and permitting of minor site additions such as dumpster pads, solving localized drainage problems, and a campus-wide storm drainage system inventory. TWT is frequently call upon to locate subsurface utilities prior to campus maintenance or small construction projects.
TWT works with GSK regularly on a variety of types and magnitudes of campus projects. Our excellent reputation with GSK stems from our consistent quality of work, a track record of staying on budget and on schedule, our ability to coordinate closely with other team members and design professionals, and our immediate responsiveness to the urgencies of the moment.
