Taylor Wiseman & Taylor provided the construction survey stakeout of the Giordana Velodrome, in Rock Hill, SC, designed by world-renowned architect Ralph Schuermann. The Velodrome is a 250-meter, 42.5° banked concrete track built to International Olympic Standards for cycling.
It is absolutely imperative for the track surface to be uniform with smooth, predictable transitions between the straightaways and the curves. Constructing the track surface out of concrete required a high level of precision both in layout and construction techniques. The track was designed and built with a tolerance of 5/1000ths of an inch. Construction stakeout is typically accomplished with offset reference marks which the construction crew transfers to the actual work, be it forms or grade surfaces. For this project and its necessary precision level, the survey stakeout was required to be to the actual forms, surfaces and guides used in the construction. As a result, over 4,500 control points were set and maintained during construction. Not only did this require a high level of precision, but all the data points had to be organized and coordinated with each of the trades in the field. This project was funded and built in 11 months, which was two years ahead of schedule.
The Giordana Velodrome is the centerpiece of the new Riverwalk Community and was selected by USA Cycling to host the 2012/2013 International Omnium Track National Championships.
