Darlington Raceway, one of NASCAR’s infamous layouts, wanted to add an infield access tunnel to one end of the racetrack in order to let traffic flow in and out during races. Without the tunnel, all vehicle access to the infield area required crossing the racetrack. The tunnel needed to be large enough to accommodate race car haulers, as well as motor coaches. Needing a fast turn-around on designating utilities, the Charlotte office of the Sanborn Map Company, an international mapping company based in Colorado, reached out to TWT.
Taylor Wiseman & Taylor’s Subsurface Utility Engineering crew performed a “utility sweep” of the track where the tunnel was planned. The area included the adjacent infield and 7 acres of parking area outside of the racetrack. Our crew utilized frequency line tracers, along with our other electromagnetic equipment, to designate the traceable utilities within the construction zone.
All utilities within the construction zone were designated in 3 days. The client was so pleased with the service time and results, that they have continually engaged TWT for SUE services.
