Taylor Wiseman & Taylor was contracted by Reading Rock to assist in an effort to produce cast stone for the revitalization of a failing façade in the Bronx, New York. TWT laser-scanned the façade and provided local dimensional/spatial control for the overall fitment of cast pieces, and reverse engineered the existing pieces with normalized geometry. The project proved very challenging, as pieces of the façade were broken and displaced. The exterior wall was also not uniform vertically or horizontally, and normalizing the geometries were of paramount concern. The digital image of the façade gave all collaborators an understanding of the space in general, and what the façade would look like when complete. The spatial analysis and dimensional control allowed TWT to develop the digital stone model with a high degree of accuracy while maintaining client dictated tolerances for castings (±0.125”) and grout spacings (0.375”). The overall model was used to control the reconstruction of the entire façade. A universal naming convention was used to keep all components under control, and the components were used to develop the stone casts. A total of 68 unique instances produced 378 total parts.
